Awards
The work of Winy Maas and MVRDV has received numerous awards and distinctions. In 2015 alone, various aspects of the Rotterdam Markthal received awards – the parking garage, the cable net façade, the retail concept, the artwork, the archaeological museum, its urban regeneration impact – and the entire building itself received the Rotterdam Architecture Award for its innovation and iconic value.
Lectures, juries, stage sets and exhibitions
Since 1987 Winy Maas lectures in numerous places and occasions all over the world and participates in competition and award juries. He designs stage sets and curates exhibition, as most recently the ’Vertical Village’ which has been exhibited in various locations all around the world.
Publications
Over the last two decades, the work of Winy Maas/MVRDV, their projects, research, exhibitions and lectures have been published and reviewed in many nationally and internationally acclaimed magazines, newspapers, and websites, including the New York Times, The Guardian, l’Architecture d’Aujourd’hui, Domus, Blueprint, and many more.
Think Tank ‘The Why Factory’
Winy Maas is professor at and director of The Why Factory, a research institute for the future city, he founded in 2008 at TU Delft and is run in collaboration with MVRDV. It explores possibilities for the development of our cities by focusing on the production of models and visualisations for cities of the future.
Together with The Why Factory, Winy Maas has published a series of research projects, titled ‘The Future City Series’ on subjects such as ‘The Green Dream’, ‘Vertical Village’, ‘City Shock’, ‘We Want World Wonders’, and most recently ‘Barba’, which discussed the potentials of applying nanotechnology in architecture.
